So Below

Confronting the unknown involves a suspension of fear. You can’t predict what will happen, but you can decide to explore with curiosity. As you move forward through the darkness and your sight adjusts, as apprehension dissolves, the element of surprise becomes exhilarating. Anxiety gives way to a childlike sense of play, wonder, and enchantment with the weirdness of existence. Shadows become new worlds to traverse, and light becomes a playmate. Moving through states of being leads to new perceptions of reality. The moment that you decide to confront the shadows, you open the door to infinite possibilities.
“So Below” is an interactive sculptural installation. Visitors are given a flashlight and encouraged to explore the dimly lit piece.
Illuminating certain elements of the installation results in cast shadows projected onto walls. As shadowed spaces are touched by light, surreal landscapes are revealed. These landscapes resemble vast deserts and mountainous regions, framed by starry skies containing something like the Aurora Borealis. Crystal clusters formed by CD fragments cast rainbows onto nearby surfaces.
Light changes reflecting, refracting and casting shadows. Exploration brings us to new discoveries, an internal illumination.
The Hermetic aphorism "As Above, So Below," suggests that what exists on a macrocosmic scale is also observable through the microcosmic, a hint to visitors that they should look below surfaces to find hidden treasures.
